Hospital Stay
After all the drama of delivering our little man into the world we were left with his life in our hands. The nurse wheeled us up to our room, we met our night nurse, they swaddled him up and left us to be parents. Just like that. They left us alone in a room to just parent the thing. After one last turkey sandwich we set to a little skin to skin time.
Up until this moment I wasn't tired at all - a little wired from the adrenaline of delivering my first child but the minute his warm little body was snug against my chest I was ready to sleep forever. I didn't have forever though - after 45 minutes he was over it and in need of food. We had spent over 55 minutes attempting to nurse the moment he was cleaned up and handed to me in the labor and delivery room downstairs. My milk hadn't come in yet so he was struggling to get all the liquid gold colostrum he could find. The only class we had attended as soon to be parents was the breast feeding class so I practiced the football hold with daddy nearby and we fumbled through the whole feed your kid scenario for a little while. Daddy snuggled in close to us on the couch chair and promptly fell asleep. Between the nurses coming in every two hours and the big guy needing to eat every hour there was no sleep for mommy. I had a good night's sleep the night before so I wasn't feeling too groggy - up for the task!
I shooed daddy out of the hospital in the morning to take care of our fur babies and to shower. He brought a cap home for the pugs to smell so they knew who was coming home soon.
As soon as he came back he was ready to snuggle.
We spent Monday with a slew of visitors and in between visitors watched the necessary videos. It was at this point all modesty went out the window as I fumbled through trying to breast feed a monster who needed to be fed every twenty minutes or so. There wasn't enough time to make sure I was covered as group after group paraded through our room and my frustration level and nipple soreness grew.
At some point during our stay they wheeled Brodie away for his newborn hearing screen. When he came back the audiologist told us that he passed on the left but deferred on the right. Since there was poop in the sack when he was born it could just be fluid or debris in the ear and they would recheck him again. On his second check he deferred on the right again so we were advised to schedule a follow up after we got home.
By the time Tuesday rolled around we were ready to go home! We were allowed to check out on Tuesday morning so I grabbed a shower, we had a few last minute visitors and then waited for the paperwork. The fatigue was starting to set in so I thought a good nights rest at home is all we needed to get back on track without the nurses popping in every two hours. Oh my - if only I had known it was just the beginning.
