Week 1 April 27-May 3

All fur babies, human baby and human adults are exhausted.

Thomas and I spend most of the day starting at him in awe of what we made and how perfect he is. I spend most of my day with him attached to my nipple. No one ever says how incredibly hard breast feeding is for a new mom - at least it is for me. He is insatiable and I'm not sure how much longer my nipples can handle it.

Who can possibly resist this squishy face?
April 28: At one week and one day old Thomas had to return to work and I had to leave the house for the first time since coming home for the hospital. Monday morning my mom came and picked us up for a newborn photo session. Jessi had given us this wonderful gift of a photography session with Brianna Anderson to capture all of his squishy-ness. We climbed into the car and I promptly started crying - again. I don't know what it is with me and cars with this baby but hopefully it will pass.

Her studio was a little room in the front of her house that was beautifully light with soft blankets and pretty baskets. Thomas was leery of this trip of ours and cautioned, "nobody better put my kid in basket like that Anne Geddes shit." Too bad dad, it was happening.

She kept the room at a warm 85 degrees and had a white noise app. She fussed with him and positioned him in all the right spots to get his photos done. It was a nice reprieve to sit in this warm room and watch this baby of mine not eat for an hour. Being the tank he already was our session was interrupted when he woke up in search of flaming hot nipple. We put a diaper on him and set to work topping him off enough to finish the session and get home. After changing his diaper blow out and handing him back to the photographer I knew our time was limited. We had one last photo to capture of he and I together when he peed down my dress. Warm infant pee that was hastily wiped off the ground with the only blanket we brought - yay! My mom and I couldn't help but laugh. We thanked the photographer and loaded my pee soaked self and the hungry hippo back in the car. We had our photos back the next day and I couldn't have been happier with all of the precious feet, hands, squishy lips and precious baby parts that were captured to perfection.

April 29: Circumcision Day. We had an eight a.m. doctor's appointment in the morning to get him circumcised. We had originally planned on having it done in the hospital but received so much back and forth information we ultimately decided to wait and have our pediatrician perform the deed. He wasn't supposed to have anything to eat an hour before the appointment and I was in a flat out panic trying to figure out how to accomplish that. We didn't have any sort of schedule other than eat. all. the. time. I breathed a sigh of relief when we wrapped up a nursing session right at 7 a.m. I knew that would buy me at least an hour but not much more.

We packed up the beast and I climbed in the back seat to watch him snooze on the trip to the doctor's office. Thomas attempted to hand his carrier to me in the parking lot so I could carry him and promptly started crying. I guess I wasn't expecting the weight of his carrier and the sudden shock of not being strong enough to carry the weight of his carrier. This crying thing was new and constant.

I was feeling proud of myself for getting him fed and to an appointment by the specified time as well as completely exhausted by eight in the morning. We were ushered to our room and check out by a nurse and then left to wait. And wait. And wait. By 8:30 a.m. homeboy was not happy and wondering where his flaming hot nipples were. He was crying I was crying and dad was annoyed with all the crying. The doctor finally rolled in with the statement, "I hope it makes you feel better than I am better at circumcisions then I am at knowing where I work." No. No this does not make me or my hungrily crying child feel better. She washed her hands, wiped down the counter and said to no one in particular, "I'm calm, I'm centered and I'm ready to work." Well that's just great lady - I am not calm, I am not centered and I am not looking forward to the state this child will be in after we've already made him hangry and then we are going to nip off his man parts. The nurse and doctor explained the procedure and then took him away.

Thomas and I sat and stared at each other with bleary eyes. With the crying baby out of the room my water works shut down and I sat craning to hear is blood curdled screams from somewhere out of reach. Luckily all was quiet so we waited. He came back into the room swaddled and quiet and a sense of relief washed over me. And then he screamed. A blood curdling, you starved me and then whacked my wanker off scream. I cried, he cried and dad was annoyed by all the crying. I knew his first affliction of hunger needed to be satisfied and frantically tried to get my boob to his open mouth scream. His cry for help created a biological boob response and all I managed to do was squirt him in the face with milk which made him cry even harder even though I didn't think that was possible. After a few more attempts he finally latched with an angry hrm hrm hrm. We sat and nursed in the doctor's office until he calmed down enough to get him loaded back into his carseat. Dad dropped us off at home and almost sprinted back to work leaving me with a terrified baby scream every time Brodie woke up. He napped most of the day but snapped out of every nap with a terrified scream as if to say, "I know what you did to me today!" We spent the rest of the week creating a DQ swirl of vaseline on his baby bits at each changing going through about 2-3 tubes of lube a day trying to make up for the pain we caused him.
